Hello all! I’m back in chilly Melbourne and have finally found the time to sift through all my photos, which makes me: (a) wish I was still on holiday; and (b) salivate! First stop on my itinerary was Hong Kong. I love Hong Kong. I don’t love everything about it, but there is a lot to love – the efficient transport system, the cheap street food, the fabulous shopping… I could go on for ages.
There are certain places in Hong Kong that I visit everytime I set foot in the busy city and one of them is the Australia Dairy Co (and no, I haven’t the faintest idea what connection this place has with Australia).
If I remember correctly, it was one of my high school friends, K, who first introduced me to this place. I’m not sure what it was about it that was so appealing, but I’ve been hooked ever since and have made the pilgrimage to this little spot in Jordan each time I visit. It’s basically a Hong Kong-style cafe, specialising in traditional egg or milk based desserts. Their food is basic, but oh-so-tasty.
I have never, ever seen this place having a quiet moment – the tables and seats are tiny and you’re pretty much guaranteed to be sharing your table with a couple of strangers. I think M had a leg cramp from being squished inside the tiny booth!
I always order the ‘express meal’ here – a no fuss set menu of macaroni in a cloudy meat broth with shredded roast pork, eggs and ham, thick toast and coffee or tea. So simple, yet incredibly satisfying.
And how much did it cost? A$3. Yes, that’s THREE BUCKS. Thank you, sad Mr Greenback.
I would’ve loved to have had one of those steamed, egg white desserts, but I really didn’t have any room in my bird-like stomach. Oh well, I guess there’s always next time (and there most definitely will be a next time).
